AI Spreads Malicious Ads

AI malvertising emerged as a threat, even as Microsoft launched its new Bing. The search engine now uses GPT-4 as its AI backbone.

Malwarebytes Labs revealed that Bing Chat, the interactive Bing application that provides an advanced interface for internet searches, had served a malicious ad. Malwarebytes explains how users unwittingly load ads, some of which can contain malware. You can learn more about it here.

The malicious ad highlighted by Malwarebytes Lab involved an IP scanner application that has a dangerous payload. In fact, the ad leads users to a phishing site that collects sensitive information after users download the application.

The malware contains a malicious Visual Basic scripthidden in the installer’s code. That script connects to an IP address in an effort to download additional malware to install on victims’ Windows machines.

AI Vulnerabilities

As a new fad, AI has attracted the attention of businesses and individuals who aim to save time and money by using it.

In the madness surrounding AI, many people have forgotten that criminals can exploit AI as much (or more than) innocent users.

Ad Vulnerabilities

Perhaps the situation reveals flaws in multiple systems. Investigators determined that this malicious advertisement came from a compromised business’ account. The criminals then used that account to publish its malicious ad.

What Should I Do?

Training and awareness continue to be the best way to prevent compromise via online threats.

Before you click on an advertisement, hover over the link to see where the link actually leads.

You may also want to avoid clicking on ads altogether to avoid becoming a victim.
